Tell us a bit about Myers Law?

Myers Law is a specialist firm offering family law advice. We are authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and assist clients with the following:

• Child arrangements upon separation
• Divorce including new ‘no-fault’ divorce
• Financial remedy proceedings
• Pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements
• Property disputes between cohabitees
• Schedule 1 Children Act proceedings
• Injunction proceedings (non-molestation and occupation orders)

Transparency of fees is at the forefront of the firm, and we provide clear information about the costs involved at the outset. We also offer fixed fees where possible including fixed costs for court hearings.

What was the motivation behind starting your law firm?

I previously worked at Hunt & Coombs solicitors where I was part of a team of ten experienced Family lawyers and paralegals. I then joined HCR Hewitsons in Cambridge, where I worked closely with their London office to set up a family law department in Cambridge. This transition (from being part of a large team to working in a more autonomous position) assisted me in taking on the new challenge of starting a law firm.

Individuals who are going through a separation also tend to instruct solicitors who they trust and have confidence in; preferably someone who has been recommended to them. As a result of Covid-19, it now much easier for solicitors to act for these clients, regardless of where they live in the country, as most initial appointments and court hearings now take place remotely. This has widened the scope for sole practitioners like myself.

What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced and how have you overcome them?

Building an online presence seems to have been the firm’s biggest challenge as it is not something which happens overnight, and it requires detail and investment.

One way to overcome this seems to be regularly putting out new content through website articles, social media and other legal platforms.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of beginning a business?

Write a thorough business plan. We needed one to obtain SRA approval and professional indemnity insurance. It has allowed us to better understand areas such as budgeting, marketing strategies and operational goals of the firm.
